Todoist for Android Review
What is most impressive about ToDoist is its sheer reach. It is currently offered on at least 13 different platforms, multiple desktop environments, multiple mobile operating systems, several web browsers, and email environments. It is more apt to simply ask where they're not.
The Android support is pleasingly solid being one of the few developers that devotes a separate page to their Android smart phone app as they do their Android tablet app. Nice to see a developer acknowledging different users in this way especially with a task management app which usually fares better on a larger display than a smaller one.
Task Management
At its core, Todoist is a task manager. The interface is designed to be easy to use with ample scrolling up and down between tasks. There are tasks and sub tasks with can be added and are shown indented below the main task in each case.
The task list name is shown at the top of the screen with the number of tasks counted. This can be selected to switch to a different list.
Dropbox and Google Drive are included for support to add documents stored in either of these cloud services.
Project Management
Projects can be created and managed centrally. Sub projects can even be created to split out projects into smaller, more manageable sections and delegated to other parties.
Tasks within a project can be controlled better using colored priorities to indicate which tasks are more critical to completion of the overall project.
Date Management
Due dates can be added in a human-like manner, i.e. “Monday at 3pm.” Recurring dates can also be added in human-like ways such as, “Every day at 3pm.”
When dates and times come up, notifications can be sent via push notifications or email reminders.
Sharing and Collaboration
Tasks, projects and specific details can be shared with others across all platforms supported with Todoist which lets any team member access their shared list from any device.
Automatic Sync
Synchronization of To Do list information is synced to the cloud when it is updated. Other devices with the ToDoist apps will be able to keep up to date due to this feature.
Widgets
Multiple widgets can be added to the Android home screen to see existing list and make added new tasks a cinch.
Premium Account
Additional items like notes, attachments, better reminder options and labels and filtering are available in the premium app version.
Android Support
The Android app is native to the operating system. This means that it integrates directly into the Google Now system for voice recognition for task entry, can use the DashClock and comes with multiple widgets for the home screens. There is even an Android Wear app version with voice activated task reminder ability.
Platform Support
The level of cross-platform support is kind of insane here. ToDoist is just about everywhere. Not only is there a Chrome extension, but a Firefox add on as well. Not content with that? If you use Gmail then there is a separate Chrome extension which lets the Gmail users add new tasks just as easily as they can create a new email to send out. Outlook and Thunderbird also get special treatment.
Windows has its own app as does the Mac, plus iOS. There is a web interface which will help Linux users who seem to be about the only sub-set of users left out here.
Verdict
ToDoist is an excellent task manager with many typical features found in other apps. The interface is clean and very usable. The cross-platform support is unsurpassed among To Do apps. There are also collaboration features, tasks, sub tasks, projects and sub project features which is quite unusual seen together. Sadly labels and filters are reserved for the premium app but other than that this is a very capable To Do list manager.
