If you’ve seen the movie “Jaws, which presented to the public how bad things can go during a shark attack, then you should know that such violent attacks are (thankfully) rare.

However, many tourists on their vacations want to know from the beginning if there is any great white shark swimming near them, than learn it the hard way. For this reason, the Atlantic White Shark Institute, based in Massachusetts, launched a new application to inform tourists about shark activity in the coast.

The application is called Sharktivity and is available for free for iOS devices. The application sends real-time alerts for sightings of sharks in shallow waters, giving users the ability to get updated and finally decide whether to enter into the water or stay on the beach sunbathing, where it is safe.

Apart from shark sightings by experts, the application allows frequent users to submit their own information in case they locate a shark, which will be sent with a notification to other users. More preferably, the application allows the user to track the movement of detected sharks, reducing thereby the likelihood of an unpleasant surprise during the holidays.

The Sharktivity app aims to help people and sharks in their peaceful coexistence, with the company stating that the only way to avoid a showdown with a shark in the water, is to stay on land.
