Second Generation Dual Screen Yota Smartphone In Prototype Phase
While last year’s model of the Yota smartphone featuring the double display – standard LCD and its E-Ink counterpart – definitively constituted an innovative piece of technology, the truth is that many critics and customers were skeptical about its capabilities. And for good reason, because although the first gen Yota smartphone featured some really cool and quirky concepts, their implementation was lacking.
The manufacturer, being fully aware that most specialty websites advised caution and suggested waiting for the next gen, is already working on the second version of the model. Well, introducing take 2 of the Yota dual screen phone prototype!
Modifications to the E-Ink panel
The 4.7 inches E-Ink panel was the most revolutionary feature of the Yota and naturally, the best place to start revamping the first gen device. The second gen prototype has made the E-Ink display completely touch responsive, therefore allowing it to take over the multiple functions without engaging the resource and battery consuming LCD display on the front. To put it simply, the E-Ink panel can now be utilized to manage phone calls, send tweets, browse through your emails, so on and so forth.
However, this always-on screen suffers from a lower refresh rate. An additional issues, at least for the prototype version of the Yota 2nd gen device, stems from the low-power display’s inability to run most Android apps, including e-readers and music streaming applications. The manufacturer did announce that the SDK will be made open source, in order for developers to adapt their applications for the specs of the E-Ink display, hopefully solving these issues.
They have also suggested that negotiations with companies like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google are ongoing, so we might have fully compatible applications for the E-Ink display at the time of the launch.
Other improvements to the original version of the Yota phone
The prototype version boasts a few other trump cards in addition to the new and improved E-Ink panel. First of all, the dimensions of the LCD display on the front side of the device have been boosted to 5 inches and the new AMOLED version is now capable at displaying 1080p resolutions. The processor has been updated to the Snapdragon 800 2.3 Gigahertz (originally Snapdragon 600 with 1.9 Gigahertz). Last but not least, the thickness of the 2nd gen Yota is now 0.35 inches lower.
Based on the specs of the phone and also assuming that the price of the new model will not soar past the original version’s $675 value, it’s safe to assume that the Yota second generation has all the advantages to become a tremendous success and pave the way for this innovative dual screen technology.
