Tokyo Game Show, Japan’s most famous gaming expo, is just a couple of weeks away and many around the globe are waiting for its time of the year to come. This year’s motto is “Changing Games: The Transformation of Fun”.

What is Tokyo Game Show?

Tokyo Game Show, or TGS for short, is a video game conference that is held annually since 1996 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Mihama-ku, Chiba City. The event will begin on the 18th of September and will last 4 days, until the 21st of the month. Similarly to E3 (another gaming expo with global reception that takes place in L.A., California), TGS will feature playable demos, trailers, announcements and new information regarding highly-anticipated games, all from major video game developers. An expected number of 220,000 attendees will have the chance to visit more than 1600 booths (including trial booths with Virtual Reality headsets) and 30+ areas to explore, making the place look like a nice maze-trap for geeks (no offense, I’m proud to be a geek!). The first two days of the conference are business days, for invited members of the industry and media; the doors open to the general public the last two days.

In this article we’ll inform you of the titles that will be making an appearance in Tokyo Game Show 2014 and the games that were announced in the pre-TGS conference that was made by SCEJA (Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia). As of September 2, 731 game titles will be exhibited in the event this year.

What to expect in TGS 2014

First of all, I'll start with Google, which will be making its first appearance in TGS this year- something rather surprising. Google presentation goes by the title “New Game World Trail Blazed by Google”, and will be presented by Chris Yerga, regional director at Google the first day of the event. Chris will focus his talk mainly around Google Play.

Now, moving on to the juicy stuff. Square Enix has some long-awaited games on its list, but unfortunately Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV are both excluded from it (but we can still hope for a surprise). Anyways, we will be watching trailers of the following SE titles:

Sony’s pre-TGS Title Announcements

It’s true, there are about 2 more weeks until TGS starts, but Sony wanted to show off a little bit earlier and let the fans have their jaws dropped prematurely. SCEJA held a press conference on the 1st of September, announcing several new games for their consoles that we will probably be seeing in TGS as well.

Starting with the PS Vita, the first game shown was Zettai Zetsubou Shoujo: Dangan-Ronpa - Another Episode, a spin-off of the Danganronpra franchise developed by Spike Chunsoft. After that there was a new trailer for the Phantasy Star Nova (release date for Japan: 27/11/2014), followed by Samurai Warriors: Chronicles 3 (jap. title: Sengoku Musou Chronicle 3; rel. date for Japan: 04/12/2014), which will be released not only for PS Vita but 3DS as well. A few other titles were shown next, namely Way of the Samurai, Luminous Arc Infinity (a new RPG developed by Marvellous Entertainment) and a new Gundam game. The title announcements ended with some romance titles such as Love Otome.

Trailers for the PS4 were showcased afterwards, starting with Destiny. Up next was Ubisoft with Assassin’s Creed: Unity, The Crew and Watch Dogs, followed by a trailer for Far Cry 4. Then there was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Everybody’s (Hot Shots) Golf and LittleBigPlanet 3. What was shown next was The Tomorrow Children, a creation from the collaboration of Q-Games and SCE Studio Japan. A trailer for The Order: 1866 was shown afterwards, and then a new trailer for BloodBorne (release date for Japan: 05/01/2015).

Moving on to more titles, there was Kingdom Under Fire 2, Let It Die, Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War & Nightmare, Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair and Disgaea 5.

Hideo Kojima got up to the stage to talk about the P.T (i.e. Playable Teaser) that was downloaded more than 1 million times, which referred to the reboot of the Silent Hill franchise; the game’s title being Silent Hills. After talking about the Silent Hill and showing a video message from Guillermo del Toro, Kojima asked fans to look forward to TGS for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain news.

Screenshot from Silent Hills P.T. The playable teaser was scary as heck, if you ask me.

Capcom then took the mic and displayed the new Resident Evil HD Remaster, and then moved on to show a trailer for Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and promised us more stuff regarding the game in TGS.

Let’s see now, Yakuza 0 was shown afterwards published by Sega, and then Namco Bandai showcased God Eater 2: Rage Burst for PS4 and PS Vita, Dragon Ball Xenoverse and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3.

The next tile shown was Dead or Alive (the new version for PS4 and XBO). Coming to end, the conference showed some last titles including Senran Kagura: Estival Versus, Ys for PS Vita and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force.

A new trailer for Persona 5 was unveiled towards the end, which will be released for PS4 and PS3 next year.

The last title that was shown was Dragon Quest Heroes for PS4, by Square Enix.

All those titles that were shown in the pre-TGS conference are probably going to show up in TGS 2014 itself, hoping for even more trailers.

Waiting Eagerly

So here’s your long list of games that will be announced in Tokyo Game Show 2014. There’s still time for changes in the schedule, but that’s the official word for now. Remember, the TGS this year will take place from Thursday 18/9 until Sunday 21/9, and the doors will open for the general public only the last two days (20/9 and 21/9).
