Firefly LED Wristband + App Could Be The Next Social Phenomenon

A Kickstarter campaign from a company called 3A Ventures is introducing an exciting new LED wristband and social app combo called Firefly.

Although the product is still in the funding and development phase, its creators are aiming to make it publicly available in the US and internationally by October 14th.

The Firefly multi-colored LED wristband will be capable of pairing with your iOS or Android device via Bluetooth BLE 4.0 technology and will be able to receive notifications and alerts from both the paired mobile device and nearby Fireflies.

The control panel for the Firefly will come in the form of a robust app that will easily integrate with Facebook and eventually other social networking sites as well.

So What Could Firefly be Used For?

The colorful and futuristic light-up wristband has numerous uses, including but not limited to the following :

• Social tool - you can link your Facebook ID to the Firefly app and set it to light up your wristband every time you get within range of another Firefly wearer who shares the same interests as you. The coolest part is that the app will continue to receive notifications from Fireflies around you even if you disable the bracelet light or if you don't have your phone with you, so you can always check out who you've been getting Flutters from at a more convenient time.
• Electronic beacon - the brightly illuminated bracelet can be used to distinguish yourself in a crowded or low-light area. Two or more people could also use the Firefly to arrange meetups in public places and easily find each other.
• Dating - the Firefly can be set to light up anytime you come within range of another wearer who you may be compatible with. The app could also be integrated with popular dating sites and social networks to simplify the process of hooking up with people who share your interests. Fireflies will make it easier to strike up conversations with people whom you've never met before by giving you common grounds to start with. 
• Night light - the wristband even has dimming capabilities, so you can use it as a convenient night light and/or lower the light intensity to keep the LED lights from being too bright in certain situations. Of course, the brightness can also be increased so that the device can be used as a flashlight/electronic candle in low visibility areas.
• Visual phone notifications - the wristband can also be set to Flutter any time your phone receives a text message, phone call, or other important alert. This could be useful in noisy environments or in situations where you can't easily access your phone.
• Phone finder - Firefly can be set to light up any time you get a certain distance away from your phone. The bracelet could then change colors from cold (shades of blue) to hot (shades of yellow, orange and then red) as you get closer to the device.

Getting the Concept to Catch Fire

While the idea behind the Firefly is certainly fascinating, the primary hindrance in the product launch and early distribution phase will be that many of Firefly's most appealing features are only really useful and applicable when there are a decent amount of other Firefly wearers to interact with. 

Still, we think that Firefly will be well-received in the tech community, especially with the advent of wearable computers expected to take place in 2015.

A wristband that can be used as a convenient visual notification alert system as well as a powerful social tool, will surely make a great match with the upcoming wristwatch computers that are expected to hit the market within the next year.
