Ralph Pini, Chief Operating Officer of Device Division and General Manager of Device Division at Blackberry announced via a post in the company’s blog the end of production for the BlackBerry Classic.

Pini stated:

...Classic has long surpassed the average lifespan for a smartphone in today’s market. We are ready for this change so we can give our customers something better – entrenched in our legacy in security and pedigree in making the most productive smartphones.

Classic was first released on December 17, 2014- a fact which makes Pini’s statement true- and was running BlackBerry 10 OS.

The transition of the company’s products to the Android platform might not be a secret now (after the leak of the upcoming Neon, Argon and Mercury smartphones), but Pini stressed that BlackBerry will continue to actively support the 10 OS, with version 10.3.3 arriving in August, and a second update expected to be available within the next year.
