China will be the first country in the world to use in real conditions in several cities quantum telecommunication networks, while a 1000km network is being constructed to connect Beijing with Shanghai.
Quantum communications are based on the principles of quantum physics, and offers a new way of information management regarding encryption and transfer speed, as well as the detailed management of photons, atoms and other microscopic particles.
Pan Jianwei, a Chinese quantum scientist and professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, who is responsible for this project, said:
Traditionally, secure encryption and transmission of information is dependent on complex algorithms. But with the increase in computing power, the complex algorithms are bound to be cracked.
China, for the operation of these networks, proceeded to another giant step: the creation of the first quantum satellite, which is expected to operate in July, and will be the first communications satellite of this type in history.
Pan also believes that within the next decade, a real quantum computer or a quantum simulator will be created, which will be one billion times faster than conventional computers.
