The voice-controlled smartwatches are soon to become a reality, as Google unveiled plans to launch the long-awaited gadgets and other wearable computer based devices. Moreover, the Android Wear project will be open-source, an announcement I believe gives software developers a heads up to prepare their various app for the watches that will arrive later this year.

Do smartwatches deserve a market of their own?

Considering that the idea behind the smartwatch is to wirelessly connect to your smartphone and be outfitted with a variety of sensors and functions, I believe they already have a status and deserve a separate niche. Besides, the Android wearables come with an interesting function, namely that they can monitor fitness and health information. Add an affordable price, a decent battery life and a sleek design and chances are many users will not have a problem trading their smartphones for a smartwatch.

For the time being, Google is experimenting with an interesting niche product that in my opinion has a better chance to become the next big thing, comparable to Google Glass. The stock market noticed the potential of wearables as well, considering that Google shares closed with 1.6% higher on last Tuesday.

Nothing is coincidental with Google

There’s no denying that Google’s daring move to jumpstart the wearable computing market is a carefully laid plan. It all starts to make sense if you consider that Apple intends to introduce “new product categories” in the following months. In spite of the fact that Apple didn’t mention anything about the new product, it doesn’t take a genius to realize they’re talking about smartwatches.

Although it is estimated that three out of four mobile devices run on an Android OS, Google doesn't want to miss out on the next big thing in technology. While you may argue that Samsung has already introduced a smartwatch and it wasn’t that well received by users, Google is a company known for its meticulous planning. If it’s going to be launched by Google, then I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.
