Game Review: Dive into the Korean horror game The Coma: Recut [PS4, Xbox One, PC]
The Coma: Recut is a horror game different from the usual. It's a 2D survival horror and a remake of The Coma: Cutting Class which was released in 2015 and it offers what it promises with great care. Lets take a look at what the game has to offer.
Plot
In The Coma: Recut you take on the role of a Korean student named Youngh. On the day of his exams something strange happens in the school, which turns it into an inhospitable location with his teacher trying to kill him. Now, you have to explore the school, avoid monsters and uncover secrets that will shed light to all these sinister happenings.
Gameplay
The game starts rather calmly and has a dose of humor that showcases and satires the Korean mentality. There is, however, an interesting story behind all the events that you can discover not only by following its core trunk but also by searching and combining elements on your own. As a horror game, it manages to create a creepy atmosphere and have scary moments, although I have to warn you that it has many jumpscares.
In the game you will experience the feeling of revelation, exploration, and mystery from the beginning and you will realize that it is dominated by the motivation to continue and organically create an atmospheric world. The characters are quite stereotypical and do not offer much as personalities in the plot, but they are linked together in interesting ways and there are intrigues and tensions between them. The game may end in slightly different ways, depending on your progress and choices, however this does not greatly increase the replayability value.
The gameplay is rather simple and functional. You have to survive various dangers and enemies, others chase you, others wait for you and others act as traps. You can run or hide as long as your stamina allows. You can’t fight with the enemies and if your life reaches the lowest point, you lose and you have to start from a previous save point. The controls might confuse you at first because you will be introduced to many actions and in the heat of the chase it's easy to press the wrong one. But after some time you will get used to it and the invironment so the game will be more pleasing and easier.
With a flashlight in hand, you explore the school and you can search for and collect objects that are important to the plot or objects that can be helpful to you (e.g. increase your life or endurance). You can also buy such items with money that you find scattered, but you also need to properly manage the items in your inventory. Beyond that, things are pretty simple. You have to go from one place to another (usually locked up or blocked and requires a temporary detour), with the ultimate goal of escaping from school. Of course, if you go out of your way to explore around you can do side-quests and find useful items or information that deepens the plot and the characters.
Pricing & Availability
The Coma: Recut is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on Steam and GOG for $15 and $13 respectively.
Graphics & Sounds
The presentation of the game is very attractive. The 2D graphics are hand-painted and the result is beautiful. Small details such as save points are blackboards, inventory is the backpack, etc., help create a realistic school atmosphere with simple touches. The musical lining and sound effects are also as they should in a game of this type and complete the whole package exquisitely. In addition, The fact that there is no voice acting is also in favor of the atmosphere and the uncertainty that goes with each step and choice. The loading screens does not last long, and all menu-to-menu transitions and actions take place without delays.
Conclusion
In conclusion, The Coma: Recut is a remarkable survival horror game. Being a 2D side-scroller with anime style gives it a special identity and also ensures that lovers of the genre will appreciate it more. If you are looking for a good and cheap horror game, The Coma: Recut is one of the best choices you can make. Let us know your thoughts and impression below.
