"Multi-use Assembly Language Small Text Editor"
Overview
SmEdit is a text editor that can be used for creating Assembly language but it can also be used as a simple text editor as well.
The focus here is on minimal distractions when typing and so the interface is pretty basic. This may be preferred by people who wish to write without a lot of fuss going on with the actual application.
The usual word wrapping, bookmarks, background color changes, text colors, font switching and so on is present here. 12 file types are supported with the application. The status bar includes a running total on the line and column number being displayed. There is Unicode support, full find and replace, jumping to a line number, and other extras. The application can also be minimized to the system tray to reduce the amount of space it takes up.
Especially large files can also be only partially loaded in order to take the strain off the installed RAM memory which is much nicer than receiving an “out of memory” error message from some other applications.
Installation
The installation completed without any issues.
There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included.
SmEdit requires Windows 98, ME, NT 4.x, 2000, or XP.
Interface
This programming text editor has a typical but more compact interface than normally found with most other text editing apps.
There is a long line of toolbar icons across the top of the application. Many are obvious, but there are quite a few to remember where they are located and what each one does.
Most of the space on the screen is taken up by the actual document being edited with few distractions. There are extensive right-click context menus that bring up a host of different options relevant to what the user is attempting to do with the content at the time.
There is also a Settings area which has a tabbed interface with options for View, Auto Save, Run, Font, File Types, Bookmark, and Misc. This lets the user get into the appropriate section and customize how the application functions.
Pros
- Solid, simplified text editor
- Good settings to adjust features according to needs
- Right-click context menu that is extensive
- 12 file types with 2 customizable types
- Larger files can be partly loaded rather than need to be fully loaded into memory
- Fast to use
Cons
- Lacks the more extensive features in programming editors and other similarly more robust text editors
Alternatives
Notepad++ is an alternative text editor that doubles as a programming editor as well as a replacement for the Windows Notepad app.
Conclusion
SmEdit is a basic text editor that focuses more on being nibble and quick rather than providing extensive features.
