"Search for and modify Windows security"

Overview

Security Explorer was once a ScriptLogic software application but it was consumed into Dell with the take over of the developer in the last 3-4 years. The brand has now moved to Quest Software Inc. in 2018. The latest version of Security Explorer offers access to security elements on NTFS drives, drive share details, and access to the Windows registry. Establish security credentials for user access to different folders within local and network drives. Verify which users have rights to access disk resources across an entire enterprise. Manage those permissions in a central console. Create backups of security settings, set a baseline to adhere to, and ensure data security remains a paramount concern. Run security audits to check that the systems put in place at the corporate level are being adhered to successfully. Also review any issues arising post-migration of server transfers and user rights management.

Installation

The installation takes a while because the package is a large one and integrates across many systems like SharePoint, Exchange server, SQL Server, and other systems across a corporate network. Registration is also required before a trial version can usually be downloaded.

Once installation is complete, the user will have access to change folder permissions for different users, create backups, edit user access history, and make many administrative changes to create and monitor user access to the corporate networks.

Interface

The interface is dark themed with a black header with Quest logo, a few menu items below, and then tabbed headings for the left pane with Tasks, Browse, Search, and Status being the four choices available. Different types of access e.g. SharePoint security, SQL Server security, and Exchange security are shown in the bottom left pane.

The main right pane is reserved for links to tools within the app relating to the area selected on the left. Often times the main right pane is divided up into a related grouping of tasks, with the main title shown at the top.

The interface is clean and business-like.

Pros

  • Security software to manage user rights across Microsoft server products and folder access on enterprise servers
  • Manage security on SQL Server, SharePoint and Exchange
  • Determine what folders and areas on drives each user should have access to
  • Create rights and revoke user rights when needed
  • Manage registry, printer, tasks, sharing, NTFS drives, services, and group rights
  • Trial software

Cons

None.

Conclusion

Security Explorer is an excellent app to manage user rights and control security across the IT resources of a major enterprise.
