Overview

Flash Renamer is another product designed by RL Vision that gives you the ability to rename multiple files easily. It has a plethora of functions and features such as casing options, MP3 renaming and ID3 tagging settings, automatic numbering, searching and replacement of strings in filenames as well as real-time previewing of the changes before they’re applied. You can also create your own set of renaming rules for tasks that require more specific actions.

Installation

Simply run the installer and the wizard will guide you through the whole installation procedure. After making a few basic settings the main installation process will begin and finish in only a few minutes. No harmful items have been found in our virus scans, so it’s absolutely safe to install. The program will not install any additional software either.

Supported operating systems are Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8 (32 and 64-bit editions).

Interface

First-time users will be greeted with a QuickStart window, which is basically a small guide to using Flash Renamer. Close it and you’ll see the program’s main window, which has the file list on the right-hand side and all the available features and settings on the left-hand side. At the top left are the global options; from there you can select what kind of items you want to include in the renaming task (Files, Folders, Subfolders and also include filters). Just under the global options are the function buttons, which change the contents of the box below. That box contains the renaming settings that you can make, depending on which function is selected. For instance, if “General” function is selected the renaming settings box has 4 tabs (Replace, Casing, Add/Remove, Move and Spaces) whilst the “Music” function has 3 tabs (Music Rename, Music Tagger and Remove MP3 Tags). This feature is quite useful for renaming tasks that require better and more precise handling.

Pros

There are several renaming settings for you to configure, with the most noticeable being the ones regarding cases, capitalization and MP3 renaming (since you can rename your MP3 files depending on their contents like Author, Title, Album, etc.). In addition to that you can also edit the tags of the MP3 files using the built-in music tagger. That means you can add or remove tags prior to file renaming. Moreover, you can set Flash Renamer to number your files automatically and only in a way that suits your needs, since it includes many numbering options.

Searching and replacing of strings and metadata tags is also possible.

More advanced features include creating your own renaming rules, a filename text editor, renaming in accordance to CSV lists, reordering parts of filenames and extraction of media properties such as height, width and duration.

Cons

There is no Unicode support.

Alternatives

There are many alternatives on the market, some of which have enhanced functionality (like Flash Renamer) whilst others are simpler. ReNamer (paid) and Bulk Rename Utility (free) are two programs that fall under the former category since they give you the power to perform batch renaming tasks with tons of flexible criteria. For Mac users, Name Mangler (paid) is recommended.
