Overview

There are times where you have to analyze a text file or document and find duplicate lines, which is a relatively easy thing to do when the file is small. But what happens when the file consists of thousands of lines and you have to go through them all? That’s where Dupli Find comes; it will search any text file, Word document or Excel spreadsheet and highlight the duplicate lines that appear in it.

Installation

Very quick and easy installation, no need to make any special settings apart from the regular settings you find in any typical program’s setup. It is only available for Windows OS.

Interface

The main window has six buttons on the left hand side: Open, Save as, Select, Tools, Settings and About. After selecting the file you want to open, a window will appear with several options that will be applied in that file, such as ignoring empty lines, surrounding whitespace (e.g. spaces, tabs, etc.) and making a case sensitive comparison. Click OK and the file’s contents will be shown in the upper text box of the window, with the duplicate parts displayed on the lower one. Different duplicate lines have different colors. Mark the checkbox next to each line of the lower box’s contents and then click the “Save as” button to save the open file without the checked lines.

Pros

The program supports text files, Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. Opening multiple files is possible too, in case you have more than one file you want to process. However to do that you must first enable this feature from the settings menu. After doing so, every time you open a file a message will pop up asking you if you want to load another file. Their contents will be shown in the order the files were opened, and after editing them they can be saved individually or as one.

The results (the duplicate lines, that is) are presented in different colors so that you have a better overview over them. They can also be selected in many ways; For instance, you can select all but first/last duplicate or all but first/last x duplicates.

There is also a tool implemented in the program that calculates the number of times each (unique) duplicate was found in the currently open file. In addition, you have the option to save to a text file or copy to the clipboard all or the (un)selected duplicates.

Cons

In an Excel spreadsheet you have to select a column that you want Dupli Find to search for duplicate rows. When you finish working on that file and save it, the contents of the row that each duplicate was found will be removed.

Alternatives

There is a software called Remove Duplicate Lines & Words In Multiple Texts with the same function as Dupli Find, but it doesn’t have many features other than selection options. Between those two, Dupli Find is certainly the winner.

Conclusion

This app is a rare shareware with an extended functionality that can be used for various reasons. The developers have tried to make it a great program, and the result is satisfying indeed.
