Overview

BulletProof FTP Server is a simple FTP solution for Windows directed to businesses, corporations or home PC users. With it you can transfer files between your server and other places, monitor the server activity, limit the number of connections made to it and chat with all the connected users. If you are using a NAT/Firewall you can configure FTP Server to work behind it without problems, or set it to operate in Passive mode to make it easier for clients to connect.

Installation

You can pick what kind of installation you want to make (Full or Custom). Full installation includes 3 components: the main program, Windows Service Support and Help Files. All other combinations of those 3 components are considered a custom installation. In the last step you can choose to automatically add a Windows Firewall Rule instead of manually making the settings yourself later.

This software can run under Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Windows Server 2003/2008.

Interface

It has a very simple interface. On the left you have the Server Info, where detailed information about your server is shown. On top there is a toolbar from where you can choose what you want to do, and the feature you selected will be displayed in the main area. From there you can further advance to other fields of the program, something like sub-menus. On the bottom there is a small place where error messages are logged, which you can resize or completely remove.

Pros

With the User Manager feature you can create accounts that have specific rights defined by you, allowing them to upload/download and manipulate files in general. If there are many users that you want to have special access, you can use the Group Manager feature to create groups with particular properties and add users there afterwards. You can then keep track of all the actions that users perform as well as the file activity (files uploaded/downloaded, edited etc.).

You can also guard the server from suspicious login attempts, known as Brute Force attacks. Brute Force attacks are basically continuous login attempts that hackers make to guess the password. The server can be protected by limiting the number of user-password input tries before the person is kicked or banned.

Cons

There are small bugs and glitches in the user interface, which seems to be a little outdated. It could use some improvement in that area to make it friendlier for the user and more modern.

Alternatives

FileZilla Server is one of the most wanted software for file management through FTP servers. It is available in more than 40 languages and has many features such as data compression on-the-fly, which can improve transfer rates. CompleteFTP is a similar application, being a very powerful Windows FTP server. It is available in three editions: Standard, Professional and Enterprise.

Conclusion

With a big list of features and with the only drawback of having a bit old-fashioned interface, this is a good choice for people who want a fully-featured, easy to use and secure FTP server for their needs.
