Overview

DeepMesh is a powerful yet an easy to use 3D modeling package which includes a variety of tools and tutorials that will help you create detailed 3D animations. It is mainly used by game developers, since they can control everything without having to use other 3D editing programs for changing attributes like lighting and texturing. It has a relatively low cost, whilst most professional 3D animation utilities offer the same features at a higher price.

Installation

With so many features it contains you would think that the installation would take forever to finish, but instead it is fast and smooth. It requires DirectX 9 or above and, if it is not available, OpenGL will be used instead. If OpenGL is not found on your system either, the program will use software rendering as a last resort. It can only run under Windows XP (SP3), Vista or 7.

Interface

The main interface has 4 windows that allow you to view your models from 4 different camera views. You can position and rotate your objects either by selecting and dragging them, or by changing the values in the x, y and z axis boxes. The buttons on top allow you create basic shapes, and you can edit their properties from the corresponding tabs in the window located on the right side of the program. The layout is very organized and attractive.

Pros

If you have used other 3D modeling tools before, you have probably encountered the need to import various model formats. DeepMesh is capable of importing and exporting over 20 model formats, such as .x, .3ds, .b3d, .obj, ogre, .mesh, collada, irrlicht and many more. This way you can show your work to people who use different applications, saving you from the painful task of converting them into a suitable format, which is not always possible anyways.

In addition, it has a built-in language called deepScript to write your own scripts in order to make repeated tasks an automatic process. For example, you might want to create a large number of the same object with similar properties. You can write a script that automates this process and creates them on its own so that you don’t have to manually create each one yourself. The program has already a few implemented scripts from the beginning.

Cons

There are no cons actually. It is easy to use, includes a huge amount of functions and tutorials, what else could you ask for? It is also updated regularly to fix any bugs that might exist and improve the application, so there is really nothing negative to say about it.

Alternatives

Autodesk 3ds Max is an alternative solution that a lot of developers go for, as it has many editions that focus on particular areas for different professionals, for example there are suites targeted to game developers and visual effects artists. Other than that 3ds Max and DeepMesh share the same capabilities, with very small differences between them. Blender on the other hand is a freeware 3D application that has fewer features than DeepMesh, a different user interface but is also available to Mac and Linux users.
