"Keyboard accellerator using customized tags"

Overview

Take a moment and think about how much time you spend on your computer daily, and how much energy you put into typing any sort of text. Now, think how much more convenient it would be if there was some sort of tagging where you would only have to type a tag of your choice and the corresponding text would appear. Tagkeys Pro 3.0 is actually the program for this job; All you have to do is set a tag for a part of a text or image and every time you type this tag, the content you defined for it will show up instead.

Installation

Installation is very easy to complete, all you have to do is follow a simple set of instructions and then wait for the installation process to finish. At some point you‘ll be asked whether you want to create a single database for all users or a different database for each user. The database is where all tags and their information will be stored.

The program can run under all Windows versions.

Interface

Once you open the program, you will notice a small, transparent box in the middle of your screen. That box right there is the medallion, simply drop any item in it and Tagkeys will ask you to insert a tag for it. But before starting to do that, you must first make some basic changes, such as creating a new Tagset to hold those items. Tagsets help you categorize tags for more efficiency.

You see the Tagsets and tags you created by clicking on the Medallion, or by right-clicking on Tagkeys’ tray icon that appears and selecting “Display Tagkeys List”. The Medallion also has a few other buttons that you can click on, such as the Record button (bottom left) that starts recording all keystrokes and adds them into a Tagkey, and the Menu button that opens the options window.

Pros

When creating a Tagset you can choose what type of tags you’ll be inserting to it. There are 4 types of tags: Plain Text, Rich Text, Images and Documents. Depending on what you want to save in this Tagset you should pick the appropriate data type. In addition to that, you also have to select the transmission method; you can choose between Smart mode, Keyboard and Clipboard. Basically this tells the program how to save the data, and usually Smart mode is the recommended choice. So, after creating a Tagset you can start adding tags, either by using the Medallion (drag & drop method or right-click method) or manually, from the Tagkeys list window. The Record feature is another way to add Tagkeys. When activated it will start recording keystrokes and save them in a Tagkey.

The window that appears when creating a tag has three text boxes on the upper side: Tag, Tagkey Name and Description. Tag and Description are optional, but a Tagkey Name must be entered. Depending on the Tagset type, you can type or paste a text, import an image or store a document.

Macros (= non-printable keyboard keys and functions) are supported by Tagkeys, meaning that you can set the program to move the cursor, insert date/time, turn Caps Lock on/off etc. There are 4 types of Macros: Cursor Movement Macros, Caps Scroll KeyLock Macros, Date and Time Macros and Windows and Function Macros. However, they are only available in Tagsets with Plain Text data type.

Cons

Sometimes during our test we encountered glitches, like all windows disappearing or the Tagkeys list wouldn’t open. Also, any Tagkeys window is always on top.

Alternatives

There aren't any true alternatives for this program as it is quite unique and has a lot of special features.

Conclusion

If you take some time to configure this program in order to suit your needs it will become a really useful tool. It is a little difficult to use at first, but as time goes by you’ll begin to like it more and more.
