Overview

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall is a network firewall that provides protection against attacks originating either from across a local area network or the internet. The software has user-defined rules which can help the software to filter through data packets in an attempt to locate malicious actions being taken by hackers. There is a learning mode where the application can attempt to learn as it runs when problems do occur. Multiple network adapters can be configured so it is easy to switch between them while retaining the customized network firewall settings. Logging and password protection is also provided.

Installation

The installation only requires 1.9 MB to be installed. It offers to create a Start menu item, but not a Quick launch or shortcut for the desktop. Following installation, the software prompts for the user to reboot the PC in order to complete the installation.

Interface

The main interface is a three item main menu, with large buttons for the toolbar below. The left pane includes the Network adapters, Rules, Firewall log, and Information. The right pane changes its contents and layout based on what section has been selected from the left-side pane.

Preset rules can be setup for many methods of communication including MSN, VPN, IRC, DNS, ARP, DHCP and others.

The settings for the firewall application includes creating password access so that the settings cannot be altered by someone else with access to the same PC later on. The software can also be set to load at Windows startup in order to ensure that the firewall begins running soon after Windows has booted up to maintain full protection from a possible intrusion attempt.

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall is a useful network firewall software package for more advanced users who don't need a whole host of firewall features, but whom can handle a rules-based approach to network communication management.
