Puran Defrag 7.7.1

Overview

When your computer gets defragmented, the overall speed and performance decrease. There are a lot of defragmentation tools available on the net, and Puran Defrag is one of them. It has all necessary features that a defragmentation software has: Automatic Defragmentation, Boot Time Defragmentation, Low Priority Defrag, Directories Defrag, Restart or Shutdown actions after boot time defragmentation and others. Puran Intelligent Optimizer (PIOZR) is one of its main features, which during defragmentation places the files and folders that you mostly use on the faster parts of your hard drives, the outer tracks.

Installation

The installation process is pretty easy and straightforward, as you only need to follow a small number of steps in order to finish installing the product, and you don’t have to make any configurations either. It is 100% clean and safe from malware and spyware.

Puran Defrag works under Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 operating systems (both 32 and 64-bit versions). A freeware edition is also available.

Interface

The interface is neat and nicely organized. The window is split in five tabs: Main, Additional Operations, Automatic Defragmentation, About Puran Defrag and Buy Now. The last two tabs are for informational purposes only and take no part in the programs functionality. In the first tab you can see the hard disks available for defragmentation and below are a few checkboxes which allow you to perform a Low Priority scan or Shut down the computer when the task finishes. Next to those checkboxes are some buttons that let you run an Analysis on the disk, start Defragmentation or schedule a Boot Time Defrag. Below you can see the cluster map, or switch tab and view the report on the last defragmentation performed. In the second tab there are some configuration settings to make the program work in a more suitable way. From there you can enable PIOZR, exclude certain files and folders, enable directory optimization for faster access and adjust few other options. From the Automatic Defragmentation tab you can schedule defragmentation tasks to be performed in the future.

Pros

PIOZR is the program’s method of defragmenting by checking which files are most commonly used, so that it can place them on the outer tracks of the hard disk since they are the faster ones. This means that they become more accessible and there is less strain on the disk. Puran Defrag can also minimize the gap between files to minimize the time taken to access one after the other, as well as reduce chances of a fragmentation in the near future. If you want to exclude large files from the defragmentation by adjusting the program ignore files with sizes that you set.

You can run a defragmentation task using command line arguments too.

Cons

There have been reported events where the program makes things run slower instead of increasing speed, but in our tests we noticed nothing like that.

Alternatives

Auslogics Disk Defrag (Free, Pro)is a very reliable software that does a very good job in keeping your hard disks defragmented, and it has about the same features as Puran Defrag. Defraggler by Piriform is also one defragmentation tool worth noting too.

Conclusion

Puran Defrag seems to do the job, and there’s no doubt that it can do it better than Windows’ Disk Defragmenter. But other than that, it doesn’t have any special functions that no other disk defragmentation tool has. It is a great small tool to defragment your hard disks and keep them like that.
