Review & Alternatives
"Advanced encryption/wipe tool."
Overview
PowerKey has its main focus as a file encryption software package.
The software can access files in order to encrypt them using one of a number of encryption methods (Blowfish, Cast-128, 3Des, Rijndael, RC2 or Twofish). The choice of a encryption methods is good, however the software doesn't specify the bit rate of each encryption method which would have been more helpful.
There is a secure file deletion feature which can overwrite the data when the file is being deleted. This will ensure that anyone else (but also including the original owner of the files) will have difficulty recovering them should they try to do so later. The user can configure how many times data is overwritten by configuring the option in the options tab.
The AntiPasswordSpy can help prevent keystroke loggers when entering passwords. There is also a strong password generator which can come in handy too.
Installation
The software required 1.2 MB of available space to complete the setup package. The installation completed without any difficulties.
There was no adware, toolbars, malware or spyware included with the setup program.
PowerKey requires Windows 95 through to Windows 8.
Interface
The interface looks kind of old. It is fully functional though during the trial period.
There is a tabbed navigation with sections for Encrypt, Decrypt, Wipe, Options, and Information. Above the navigation tabs is a menu system with top-level menu options for File, Action, Option, and Help.
Each section of the application has an array of configurable sections to get the most out of the encryption, decryption, secure file deletion, and other features.
Pros
- Encrypt or decrypt files to protect them from access
- Decide whether to automatically delete the original source file once a new encrypted version of the file has been created
- Several encryption methods are included in the software (Blowfish, Cast-128, 3Des, Rijndael, RC2 or Twofish)
- Securely delete files
- Change the number of times that a file is overwritten with null data
- AntiPasswordSpy feature can protect against keystroke logging while entering a password
- Password generator included
- 14 day trial period
Cons
- Older interface
- Not everyone will understand all the features
Alternatives
Encrypt can provide a useful way to encrypt files to protect them before storing them in the cloud or locally as a backup.
Conclusion
PowerKey is a helpful tool for encrypting files, decrypting them later, securely deleting files by overwriting them a set number of times and for working with passwords. The tool also lets the user pick from several possible encryption methods.
Requirements: Win95, 2Mb HDD, 8Mb RAM
What's new in this version: changes in v2.1: minor bugs fixed, big fonts support, option 'Delete original file(s) and/or folder(s) after encryption' has been changed with its Wipe analogue
