"Large-scale peer-to-peer network application."

Overview

FreeNet is a unique anonymous/secure peer-to-peer network that lets you share, publish, and browse websites and pages that can only be accessed within the FreeNet or your own private network. With over 2 million downloads since its inception this innovative software is taking the world by storm and rapidly gaining popularity.

Installation

Installing FreeNet is as simple as downloading the setup file and following the wizard style guide to completion. Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

Interface

The user interface appears to be similar to that of a conventional web browser, with a Web address bar at the top center, several button icons that facilitate simplified navigation, and a multi-search field in the top right corner. The only difference between this software and a conventional browser is that instead of connecting you to the World Wide Web, it connects you to the private, more secure FreeNet, which is a completely separate Internet with its own websites.

Pros

  • Automatically encrypts all information being transferred to prevent the possibility of data interception and make it more difficult for eavesdroppers to determine the IP addresses and locations of users

  • Very gentle on system resources, consuming only 10% of a single CPU core and about 200 MB of RAM to run continually

  • Darknet feature lets you create your own private Internet network that only facilitates connections between specified trusted users. This feature is useful for conducting confidential business correspondence and sharing other private information

  • All data stored in the FreeNet is cryptographically protected, so there is a very low risk of data theft and other dangers associated with insecure connections

  • By dynamically replicating and relocating data in response to user inquiries FreeNet performs with high-efficiency and utilizes very little bandwidth regardless of the workload it is processing

  • Every process executed within the FreeNet is decentralized and anonymized throughout a global network of servers, making it practically impossible for a hacker to hijack or exploit a user's information or system resources

Cons

  • Page loading times may be a bit slower than those seen in conventional browsers over the World Wide Web, as information has to be rerouted through several nodes to maintain the anonymity and security of users

Alternatives

Other software that provides Internet browsing safety and anonymity include Hotspot Shield, OpenVPN, Cyber Ghost VPN, and VyprVPN. Although these applications offer similar functionality because they let you establish private networks and browse the Internet anonymously, FreeNet is unique in that it is provides access to an expanding network of sites that are separate from the World Wide Web.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a way to conduct personal or business operations in a secure and anonymous manner, without publishing or transferring data via the World Wide Web, FreeNet offers a unique and ideal solution that users of all technical skill levels can appreciate. Since there aren't nearly as many webpages to access on FreeNet as there are on the World Wide Web, this network is more ideal for private communications and data publishing/viewing/transferring than entertainment purposes.
