Review & Alternatives

"Alternative to Windows Device Manager"

Overview

DevManView is an alternative Windows device manager to use instead of accessing the standard Device Manager that comes with the Windows OS.

The software displays the devices and their associated properties in an easy to understand table. There is no tree view used here which may or may not be preferred by users.

DevManView is also capable of displaying the devices from other computers linked in a network as long as the computer already has administrator access rights to the second computer. Therefore, the software can be used by system administrators who wish to make quick adjustments to other computers across the corporate network. Alternatively, users with a home network will be able to access their other computers directly rather than needing to hop from desk to desk just to look up and make changes to system devices.

It is also possible to access the devices on a Windows computer that is not booting by using this software from another networked computer which could help when disabling certain devices or making other changes.

Installation

No installation is required as this is a portable app which can run directly either from a PC or via a USB flash drive.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included with the file archive.

The 64-bit version of this software is required in order to enable or disable devices on a 64-bit version of Windows. Both a 32-bit and 64-bit version can be accessed from the developer's product page.

DevManView runs on any version of Windows from Windows 2000 to 10 (32-bit or 64-bit).

Interface

The interface is simplistic with a menu system and only a few toolbar buttons.

All devices are shown in the main pane with a column used for each distinct piece of information. The columns include Device Name, Manufacturer, Device type, Device instance, and many more.

Pros

  • Alternative device manager instead of using the one that comes with Windows
  • Enable devices or disable devices
  • Access other computers on a network and change their device manager settings
  • Export a report of the results to a plain text, HTML, XML or CSV file
  • Export to the Windows clipboard
  • GUI and command line access (command line can be used to enable or disable a device)

Cons

  • Not any better looking than the Windows Device Manager
  • No devices tree-like view

Alternatives

Device Remover is a device manager alternative which includes the bulk removal of devices from a system.

Conclusion

DevManView is a possible alternative to the standard Windows Device Manager. It offers networked access to other computers where devices can be disabled on non-booting systems.
