Overview

Initially, it was kind of hard to rip Blu-ray movies. But after a while it became easier, and currently there are many software for this task. This review is about Blu-Ray Converter Ultimate, which allows you not only to rip movies from Blu-ray discs but also convert them to different files formats and even perform basic video editing. Other features include ISO image file support and NVIDIA CUDA technology support for faster processing.

Installation

Run the installer, select the language you want to use throughout the installation procedure and follow a series of easy steps in order to complete the installation. You don’t have to configure any special settings, there is however a step in which you are whether to let the program send anonymous usage statistics to VSO-Software (no personal data is collected).

The program is clean from malware and doesn’t include any other additional advertised software either.

Supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.

Interface

When you open the program you will be presented with a blue-themed interface without redundant buttons and features on it, but only important ones in the toolbar area (e.g. loading a disc/folder/ISO file, removing items from the list, opening the settings menu and selecting the desired output file format). The rest of the window allows the user to see all included items in the disc/folder/ISO file in a structured way along with a few details for each item in the structure. You can change the view of the structure to make it minimal, normal or show thumbnails.

Pros

VSO Blu-ray Converter Ultimate can convert a Blu-ray disc’s contents, a folder with the structure of a Blu-ray disc or a Blu-ray ISO file to several different formats: DVD (creates DVD compliant structure), MKV, AVI, MP4, M4A, MP3, MTS, M2TS, etc. but if the user wants to convert the movie in order to watch it on a particular device, then he can select it from the device list so that the program can automatically choose the best settings for it. Supported devices are smartphones (iPhone 1/2/3/4/5, Samsung Galaxy S/S2/S3/S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 1/2/3, Generic Android Smartphones, 3GP smartphones), Tablets (iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 1/2/3, Samsung Galaxy Note), portable devices (Archos, iPod) and game consoles (PS3, XBOX 360).

Video editing features are included too: trimming, image post-processing and subtitle edition. Padding and cropping features are implanted too.

The program is optimized to identify multi-core processors and process tasks even faster. It supports DXVA2 hardware decoding (NVIDIA CUDA, Intel and ATI technology) and also supports NVIDIA CUDA technology.

After the conversion task is complete, the software can burn the resulting file(s) into a DVD using its built-in burning engine. For the DVD format only, the user can create a menu and add chapters too.

Cons

It cannot convert 2D videos to 3D. Also, you need extra software to convert protected movies (e.g. AnyDVD).

Alternatives

Aiseesoft Blu-Ray Ripper (paid) is a great alternative to VSO’s Blu-Ray Converter Ultimate, since they both share a big portion of features. In contrast to Blu-Ray Converter, Aiseesoft Blu-Ray Ripper can convert videos from 2D to 3D. Other alternatives are Leawo Blu-ray Ripper (paid) and Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper (paid).

Blu-Ray Converter Ultimate provides tons of features for customizing to the limit the way you want to convert your Blu-ray movies, and it also has a burning engine to burn the results afterwards. Awesome choice for the average user.
