"Fix registry errors with Registry Cleaner."

Overview

Installed software and hardware create entries in the registry to store settings and data so that they can run properly. As time goes by software are added and removed, drivers are updated, and all those changes make the registry keep obsolete and corrupt keys. Auslogics has a solution to this problem, and it’s called Registry Cleaner. Although its name doesn’t sound too exciting, it promises to fix and delete unwanted registry entries that cause system errors and crashes, while having an impact on the overall performance of your computer. Let’s find out what it has to offer.

Installation

During installation you will be asked to install Ask Toolbar and make Ask the default search provider for your browser. You also have to choose if you want to make Ask.com your browser’s home page and new tabs page. Afterwards the installation process will begin and will finish only a couple of minutes later.

The supported operating systems are Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 (both 32 and 64-bit versions).

Interface

The program’s interface is clean and gives you a nice overview of the categories that the system registry is split into. This is on the left side of the main window. At the center is the area where the scanning takes place and the results are shown after it finishes. Before starting a scan, this part of the window shows when the last scan took place, how many errors have been repaired so far and a recommendation concerning the computer’s health. You can choose just to scan and show the errors or let the program repair them too.

Pros

The scanning takes place in a lot of registry locations regarding broken shortcuts in the start menu, quick launch menu or recent documents, file associations, extensions, help files, history lists, junk software entries kept after uninstall, missing fonts, registry errors in web browsers and several other areas. After the scan is over, you can navigate through the results and see information about each one separately. A detailed report about the errors can be viewed in your web browser that shows how many of them were actually fixed, a percentage of the performance gained after the repair and information about all the errors themselves.

If there is an area that you don’t want to scan because you are not sure how it will affect the system’s stability, you can leave it untouched by unchecking it in the left pane. By default the areas that are safe to scan are checked and the rest are left to the more experienced users to decide if they want to include in the scan or not.

A backup feature is implemented so that you can undo the changes made to the registry if something goes wrong.

Cons

I have not find anything wrong with the software except for two minor annoyances. The detailed report that you can view after every scan is always saved under the same name. This way every new scan overwrites the last one’s report. Moreover, a detailed report is not saved unless you choose to view it after the scan; otherwise the last saved one will be kept.

Alternatives

CCleaner is a widely accepted system optimizer that apart from being a registry cleaner it has other uses as well (junk file cleaning, program uninstall, cookies managing etc.). However, after testing both CCleaner and Registry Cleaner on the same computer, we were surprised to find that after using CCleaner first and fixing 18 system errors (we also ran a second scan to make sure all of them were repaired), we ran a scan with Registry Cleaner on the same areas we scanned with CCleaner and it found 416 errors, which it fixed as well (second scan with Registry Cleaner found 0 errors). This is quite an unexpected result.

TuneUp Utilities is a PC optimizing software which has plenty of tools for repairing and improving your computer’s performance in every way you can think. Its registry cleaner is one of its very accurate and reliable tools.

Conclusion

Auslogics Registry Cleaner proved to be a stunning software that had no trouble doing its job, fast and effectively. Why don’t you grab it now and give it a try, it’s free after all.
