Overview

Agent Ransack is a free file searching utility. It is the lite version of FileLocator Pro (that’s why it is also known as FileLocator Lite), which includes many features that will help you find the files in your disk easily and fast. You can search for common file types such as Office formats (including Office 2007 and OpenOffice) while the results are shown with the highlighted search terms so that you don’t have to open each file separately. There is also a print preview feature that allows you to check the results before printing.

Installation

It is very easy to install Agent Ransack. Simply run the installer and follow the few steps in order to complete the process. It won’t take long; it is only a matter of a few minutes before you get this program running. It’s clean from any kind of malware and additional software.

Supported operating systems are Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7. It is compatible with both 32 and 64-bit versions.

Interface

The interface is not complicated but well-organized. It is split into 3 main areas: Criteria View (top), File List View (bottom left) and File Contents View (bottom right). Criteria view is where you enter the search criteria. If the “Expert User” checkbox at the top right is checked, Criteria View will have more advanced options for you to make otherwise only the basic options will be shown. File List View is where the results are displayed and in File Contents View you can see the selected files from the previous area. If you are searching for files by content, then the contents found within the files are also displayed in Contents View. You can hide this area from the Window menu bar.

Pros

The program supports Boolean, DOS and Regular expression types. For instance you can use the AND operator (Boolean expression) between search phrases to combine them or use the expression *.avi (DOS expression) to search only for AVI files. The program can also be used by using command line arguments.

You can view the results’ contents without having to open each file. If in your search you have entered containing text of the file you’re looking for then in the Contents View area you will see it highlighted.

You can save search criteria and load them another time, as well as export search results into a file. Print and Print preview features are available for printing the results.

Cons

It found all the files it searched for, and only within a few minutes. Any additional features are in the paid version, so there is actually nothing to complain about.

Alternatives

A few good file search utilities are Locate32 (free), Copernic Desktop Search (free and paid editions available) and XSearch (free). Out of those Copernic Desktop Search stands out, especially its Professional edition which offers even more features than the free edition.
